The Tammany Tiger Loose

“The Tammany Tiger Gets Loose" shows the aftermath of a ferocious attack by the Tammany Tiger on Columbia, the symbol of the Republic, in a Roman arena. Her crumbled form, broken shield and sword is looked on gleefully by Boss Tweed, sitting in the bisellilum and surrounded by other Democratic politicians. In the background, Lady Liberty and a woman with a caduceus lay slain on the floor, the first of the Tammany Tiger’s victims. Here, Nast is warning of Tweed’s growing power and the danger he poses to liberty, justice and peace.
